Also liked some westerns with Richard Widmark and Audie Murphy. Walter Brennan had to be one of the best side kicks in westerns. Jack Palance was one of the best bad guys ever.

Sam Elliot and Clint Eastwood would have to be the coolest, hands down. The Duke, a bit corny, but i liked him in The Cowboys and True Grit.

In no particular order:
Paul Newman
James Stewart
Robert Duvall
Clint Eastwood
Sam Elliot
Walter Brennan
John Wayne
I don't think there ever has been a better western made than Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid (all of course IMHO). Paul Newman is magnetic on the screen.
Sam Elliot is just super cool in that western type long slow drawl of his. Sam was just born 30 years too late. If he'd been born a generation earlier, he'd have been one of the movie greats (during the era of the western).
Walter Brennan is a superb sidekick, as maverick mentions above. Strother Martin, a sidekick in Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, also is an excellent sidekick (though he rarely starred in westerns).
Robert Duvall is also a big favourite of mine. Superb actor.
